In my high school there was a boy named Sam who always wanted to punch one of the seagulls that would hang out by the outdoor lunchroom tables, swooping in and stealing food. For 3 years I watched this kid bellowing at the top of his lungs and take swipes at the birds, but they were always too fast.

Then one day in his senior year he did it. He punched that bird with a mighty smash, so hard that it killed the bird.

In one moment you could see him go from his ultimate victory over the evil seagull overlords -to regret. He cried and said he wished he’d never tried. The fight was over and he lost his will to fight.
