I remember reading or seeing somewhere that originally, the game was set to begin in media res, with the revelations about Joel’s past coming later. They changed it, partially, it seems, as a way of using Sarah’s POV to orient us into the world from a place we understand, then abruptly ending her life to communicate the brutal code of the story, which is that no one is safe. Not even the innocents.
